Open Salon October 2008: Palin

Coffee? Tea? Lamaze Coach?

Photobucket Last night I read Dr. Altman's article in the NY Times,   Many Holes in Disclosure of Nominees’ Health.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/20/us/politics/20health.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp I did my best imitiation of Evelyn Wood Speed Reading in order to get to the Palin information.
Well slap me silly.  I assumed that when a potential candidate is vetted that the health records would eventually make their way into the public arena to assure us that this special special person, one heartbeat away from the Presidency, and in this case, one more cancer cell away from the Presidency would not have any disqualifying health issues.  But there was virtually nothing there.   Dr. Altman wrote this:
"Nothing is known publicly about Ms. Palin’s medical history, aside from the much-discussed circumstances surrounding the birth of her fifth child last April. Ms. Palin has said that her water broke while she was at a conference in Dallas and that she flew to Anchorage, where she gave birth to her son Trig hours after landing.  Last week Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for Ms. Palin, said the governor declined to be interviewed or provide any health records."
Something about this silly paragraph sounded crazy.   It was late.  I was exhausted.   I went to bed.  But alas, just when you think it is safe to slumber, the midnight cranking of your brain working overtime comes a calling.  It screamed at me to wake up and listen.   The sound of little metal squeaky things, called the wheels of my brain working overtime to compute the impossible equation I had given it before bed, kicked me right out of bed.
And here is what it was saying.  Idiot!  Buy a vowel.  Buy a donut.  We don't care.  Just think about it for a tiny moment.  And slowly the light grew brighter.
Indeed!  Dr. Altman!  I am surprised at you.  What fodder you have here. And you never said anything more.  So I will.
After a quick little search I found an article from the Anchorage Daily News, dated April 22, 2008 that talked about the birth of Trig.  Interesting stuff.  First, Palin was at a conference in Dallas and her water broke.  She stays to give her little luncheon chat, hops on a plane and sounds like First Dude Todd, the translator was there to accompany her.  And since the mighty Governor's plane was now sold, she had to fly commerical.  On Alaska Airlines.  Having irregular contractions, her amniotic sac already broken, she gets on a commerical flight that takes hours and a plane change to go back to Alaska.  In case you want a look, here is the linky.
http://www.adn.com/626/story/382864.htmlWhy she might do this?  Let me guess.  A little bit of  Palin-logic if I have learned even a tiny bit of Palin-speak these past weeks.
  • Dallas = big town = not terribly Pro-America.
  • Anchorage = smaller town= Pro America.
But seriously, the Anchorage article intimates that no one at the airline suspected she was that far along, if even pregnant.  So no one questioned her hopping on a long flight while in early labor.  Um, with the 5th child?  Don't they typically come faster?
"After four kids, the governor said, she knew what labor felt like, and she wasn't in labor".  It is a long flight Governor!  How could Palin know that mid flight she would not have to skip the coffee and tea and ask for a Lamaze coach?  Oh wait.  First Dude, Todd was traveling with her.
Something just doesn't make sense here.  So I leave you with some questions that certainly could use some answers.
  •  What woman, whose water has broken, would hop on a long long, and not direct commerical flight, even having irregular contractions?
  • Don't most doctors want you in the hospital to avoid infection once the water breaks?
  • Palin is a relatively petitie woman.  How does a pregnancy not show at that late stage, even if it was a month before she was "actually" due?
  • And in the event of premature labor, who does not avail themselves of exemplary health assistance in a place like Dallas?
And with that, Lulu and Phoebe have put themselves to sleep...

What piques my curiosity about this even more is the fact the she won't release her medical records. I would think she'd be in the best health of all of them. She said the other day that she would, then said "if" they are released. Like, "if" she can get someone to change them they'll be released?

And since Trig has Downs-Syndrome, wouldn't she need extra care or have to take additional precautions? I don't know the answer to that, just wondering.
Me too Julie, me too. I agree - she probably would be in the best health of all of them, so why not release the records? What' s the big deal? Makes me really think that this is another thing they forgot to have vetted adequately....

And seriously. Who flies after their water breaks?
