In today's interview with Terry Moran from ABC news, Professor/President Obama was asked why he is being so nice to the Republicans who seem to be dissing him in the House and the Senate. Perhaps, Moran intimated, they think he is not mean enough and they might be taking advantage of Obama's nice nature.
Professor Obama replied with a small chuckle. He paused, giving careful thought to his reply and said, "People shouldn't underestimate the value of civility".
I do believe the United States just swooned.

"People shouldn't underestimate the value of civility".
This quote could be a defining moment quote. Like a "ask not what your country can do for you..." type quote.
As a country, we have lost some of our innocence and civility over the pas decade. Starting with Ken Starr's witch hunt.

Well, I'm certainly swooning. Can you imagine Bush saying that?
With any luck, this new civility will rub off on the rest of us as well. Just imagine: polite drivers, non-obnoxious talk show hosts, maybe a little less of the F word and a little more intelligent discourse....

Good for him. The thing that most relieved me when he was elected was the feeling that at last, we would have someone suitable representing us in other countries, someone who would behave in a civil and dignified manner toward other world leaders - not to mention speak in complete sentences.
(It would be nice if some civility would rub off on some of the trying-to-be-funny-but-ending-up-just-being-cruel posts I've seen lately here on OS. Bleah. Toxic!)

compare and contrast -
so? - D. Cheney
F... you - D. Cheney
Rachel Maddow is currently reporting that the Obamas are considering a regular Wednesday night cocktail party at the White House (which implies that folks from egads, the other side may be regularly invited)

Damn fine catch!!!
Yes, civility in the right hands, is far more powerful than the pique the repugnicans are displaying.
Did we pick the right guy or what?

once, with the ex, i was leaning on him. i took a big deep breath and settled in twice as deep. he asked if i just swooned. i had to say yes.
Can you imagine Bush saying that?
Laurel, NL... I can imagine Bush saying that... but it would come out sarcastically, since he'd be expecting everyone else to be civil, and implying that he already was.
I do wish Obama well on the practice of civility. Yet, I also want him to fight back more fiercely. At least verbally. Bill Moyers could be his model. Moyers' tone is always civil. His words, however, can really sting.
Great post! Thumbed.

Bush attempting to say this (with it written for him, on a teleprompter):
"People should misunderestimate the values of us civilizers."

This is ABSOLUTELY why this republican can root for this guy. We need him to do well given the state of the economy. He is making all the right moves as far as I am concerned with respect to the way he's interacting with both parties.
Republicans can't let go of Clinton, and democrats can't let go of Bush 2. Both are now history, and the snipes have to stop. I hope he keeps at it.

I absolutely agree. The sniping is just getting old. Watching them battle it out with those stupid speeches in the Senate and the House drive me to drink.
Professor Obama just makes me want to be a better person.
