What Doesn't Kill Us Makes Us Grateful for Aspirin

The littlest kid was three years old and I was a mere 22, with real brunette hair.   The oldest kid was 6 and mad as a small-pint could muster.  We were leaving the frozen tundra called Buffalo, leaving our beloved chicken wings behind all for an even colder place called Burlington, VT.    The 6 year old was leaving a private school that catered to artsy and smart(ass)  children where she was on  scholarship because we were also poor college students .  But now we were taking her away from the only kindergarten she had known and trading up for public school and a bunch of strangers.  Her life, as she told us, was ruined.   Fast forward.  Don't worry.  It isn't.   The girl got into Bryn Mawr but passed it up for a year wandering around Israel and Europe.  Eventually she settled in New Orleans where she is the artist known as Myrtle Von Damitz lll.
The Geek, a recent graduate all those years ago, had his pick of a few different techy jobs and chose Big Blue in Burlington.   He said the Mountains were the reasoning behind the decision.  After flying to the land where each company resided, he based his final decision on the view from 10,000 feet up in the air.   I always reckoned The Geek was a romantic, and that cemented it.
And until today, 30 years later, we never had to pack a water glass again.  Each move was usually job related and always fronted by the employer.  It was a simple benefit for taking on a job in a new location.  They had relocation packages that took care of most things having to do with a work related move.
The problem with that practice is there is no incentive to throw anything away or downsize.  As long as the future places to live are roomy enough, everything comes along.
Here we are, three decades later, old crypt keepers,  with our first home grown move.  I've mentioned the big theory about using paperbags and then milk crates (at the container store for $9.99!).   But one thing I didn't mention is how long it takes to do this with one car, a full time job with deadlines, and two pint sized canines.
For two weeks we have been ferrying over loads of milk crates and bags, unpacking as we go, and reusing them.   The sober realization that we were doing this alone made us scurry about lessening the load, so to speak.  We downsized by tossing stuff, using Craigslist (which is a post all by itself), Ebay, and probably a Garbage Garage sale.   The goal was to have all the small parts over there before the larger furniture arrived.   By movers.   Yes, indeed, we are paying a 6 hour minimum at $45 per person, 3 person detail, to move exactly 10 pieces of furniture and some patio stuff.   Oh, and 12 boxes of books.
All the small parts are pretty much moved with some stragglers crawling to the door making sure we don't leave them behind.  And from the closet where the Garbage Garage sale items rest, I can hear them calling out to me -    "pleeeeeeease don't leave us behind!  you know you love us, pleeeeeease don't leave us!"  -   If I shut the door I can barely hear them, and I would use my ipod if only it wasn't already moved.   Ingrates.
For a week or so, we live in two places, one large and almost empty.  One small enough to reside within the large with room to spare.   We have coffee in the morning at one place, dinner at the other because the kitchen is there, not here anymore.
And many things are staying behind in some fashion or other.   And I have to wonder why I didn't bother to do this years ago.  It is freeing to have less stuff.  It is freeing to not stick stuff in a closet thinking I might use it someday, but rather rehome it where someone will use it now.
But really, while the milk crate move has been somewhat successful (and it isn't over just yet), I don't think I would repeat it quite this way next time.   At least this time I don't have the pint-sized one and the smaller pint-sized one moaning about leaving all their friends behind.
And as for the muses, Lulu and Phoebe?  They are moving almost next door to their boyfriend, Gordie.   They have no idea just yet, but wait until they read the pee-mail!

Thank you for this.

I drove from Burlington to Buffalo yesterday as the last leg of a long journey for work, and I've been kind of dragging tail a bit today. This was just the sort of "after moving, there is more moving" story I needed to read.
Rated for pee-mail :)
You said pee-mail... heheh
OMG L&P ~ her work is amazing ... gorgeous and terrifying and surreal and soft and vivid ... WOW ... just WOW!!!

I had to read this twice because I couldn't stop looking at "Myrtle"'s work ... Where on earth did that name come from??? LOL!

Oh dear ... moving ... I wish I could wave my magic wand and everything would be perfect ... a cook without her kitchen is simply inhumane!!! Good for L&P though ... Gordie, huh??? That's one lucky dude!

When we moved out here, the daughter went ballistic ... we were simply ruining her life. Recently when we thought we might have an opportunity to move back ... same thing ... damn kids and their passion for consistency!

xoxo
I hope that your kitchen in the new place is workable for you. I know it's selfish, but I don't want to have to give up any of your gluten-free creations.

Good luck with your move. Moving is never fun even without kids to add to the fun.

Loved the line about "pee-mail!"
Taking a small break from the remainders of what needs to be moved. So nice to come back to comments!

dicea - that is a long long drive! But while you are there, can you eat some wings for me. I especially miss Shirley's and I don't even know if it exits anymore. And Burlington was so special for us - mostly where the kids grew up.

bluesurly - ever notice how the canines must smell every pee spot and then pee on it? voila! pee mail.

Crayons - I did indeed!

Ann - thanks for that. Her work as evolved over the years. We have the early works of Myrtle here and a couple that she has gifted from shows since and one that I paid a mortgage payment to own. Those paintings emerged after living in New Orleans - it is her cynical dark side which was always there. One day I will write a post about her. She is a wonderful girl (as is the other one). I am lucky to have terrific daughters.

Lisa - yes, the kitchen is the reason we picked this little apt. It is bigger than any other room and has a wonderfully long counter for prep. Just no refrigerator space, so can't store much, but I can live with that. Looking forward to getting back to baking!
Moving is pain and I hope this one goes smooth for you and the paws . . ."pee-mail" LMAO!

Pawed!
Ugh! Moving! I've been thinking about it for two years but can't bring myself to do it! I would have one of those garbage sales before I moved so I wouldn't have to haul all this stuff with me... I really want a condo but with this 85lb dog... not gonna happen!
Moving is such trauma and you've made it hilarious! And gad, it's obvious towering talent runs in the family, wow. Did you ever hear some fabulous saying or expression and wonder who came up with it? You will win that prize with the perfectly perfect descriptive pee-mail. Love it!

Maybe you have sustanence, sweetness, some spice and much good health in your new home.
i know you didn't make up pee-mail, but i love your use of it vis a vis l&p casing out their new abode and their boyfriend gordie, well, that's a different kind of mail. you've again captured this horror show perfectly. i can totally relate to the downwardly mobile moving experience. my first moves were also financed and i could afford real movers for the next couple of ones. but then there came the discount packers and movers and this last time it was "friends" for sorting and packing and the most discounted mover ever on god's earth. those crates are great. i love the mobile breakfast and dinner. again, im' so glad you're getting this out on here. if i'd done that with my last move, it wouldn't have been such complete hell. sorry for making this all about me me me. love lvoe love and gratitude for your excellent company.
Loved this. Loved the writing, the topic, the puns (people are really flipping for "pee-mail"!), loved reference to "old crypt keepers". Just enjoyed it. Don't have anything particularly witty to say. Hope that's OK. Every once in a while, ya just have to relax and enjoy the ride. I did.
Crap - forgot to say: loved the post title which is what got me over here. That was supposed to be the first thing I was going to say.
Another reminder of why I will never move again. Delightful as always. The muses are in for some fun--Collin's girlfriend lives right next door and they're just thrilled with each other. :)
Thank you LadyMiko for the good thoughts. Much appreciated!

MAWB - lots of big dogs in these apts! What kind of dog? Sounds adorable. I love big dogs.

Thank you Sally - I wish I made up pee-mail, but it has been around for a while. It is perfectly descriptive of what dog's do though, so it is a favorite. Thanks too, for the good thoughts. I'd rather peel onions that do this move.

Teddy - I would love to have a magic elf come and do some of this stuff because there is enough for many to do. But I am such a control freak that my friends might hit me over the head and leave in a huff. It will be over soon. At least I am getting some exercise!

dvdickens - You comments certainly made me laugh. I appreciate it! Laughing is good. And I might actually be enjoying it more if my feet didn't hurt so much. Not the best thing to do with old running shoes.

Mer - yep - can't wait for them to figure out that they are in the same hood as the boyfriend. When walking I expect to be pulled in that direction every time we go out the door! Silly pups.
The books alone are worth every penny spent on the movers. I moved six boxes of books when I moved out of my mom's house last year- never again. Never. Again.
